Are you a bubble tea expert? Some of these facts might surprise you, some are historical, and some are just fun!  Here are a few things you may or may not have known about the hottest beverage of the moment: Bubble tea.

1. It originated in Taiwan

Boba tea was created in Taiwan.  Now, it’s made its way all over the world and is popular from Taiwan to London to right here in St. Louis!  It’s not hard to find STL boba tea while exploring the city.

2. It has been around since the ‘80’s

Although it has gained much popularity in recent years, bubble tea actually isn’t a new fad!  It had been around since the 1980’s.

3. It’s called bubble tea for an unexpected reason

Did you think it was called bubble tea because of the boba balls in it?  Many people do, but think again!  The term bubble tea actually comes from the bubbles that form at the top of the drink, NOT the boba balls at the bottom. If you look closely, you’ll see small bubbles floating to the top in all the best bubble tea.

4. The boba is made of tapioca

So let’s talk a little more about the boba.  The black balls sitting at the bottom of a cup of bubble tea are tapioca balls or pearls, also called boba. They are usually very mild in flavor, and don’t have a super strong taste when you eat them.  Good boba has a chewy texture – it is not meant to be mushy.

5. It comes in many varieties and flavors

Bubble tea is for everyone!  There are so many different varieties and flavors of boba tea that exist now.  You can get everything from fruit flavors like strawberry to sweet flavors like chocolate and herbal options like jasmine.
